Status of Active CEA Standards Projects

These are the projects that are currently active within CEA’s standards committees. Anyone, except a member of the press, is eligible to join a CEA standards committee. For members of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) there is no charge to participate in CEA standards activities. For companies or individuals who are not members of CEA there is an annual fee for participation in CEA standards activities. Please see "How to Join" for more details.

R3 Audio Systems

CEA's Audio Systems Committee produces standards for consumer audio equipment. All are encouraged to join the Audio Systems Committee and get involved in its activities. The Audio Systems Committee is particularly interested in adding new members (called "users") who acquire audio products from those who create them, and in adding new members who neither produce nor use audio products, such as regulators, associations, and others (called members with a "general interest").

 
WG1 CEA-CEB19 Recommended Loudspeaker Safety Practices
Summary:
WG1 is working on a revision of CEA-CEB19, which provides guidance to manufacturers regarding some specific safety issues related to loudspeakers. The guidance is not comprehensive and the document cannot be used as the ultimate standard for loudspeaker safety. CEA-CEB19 should be used in conjunction with the manufacturer’s own safety specifications and testing program.

WG1 ANSI/CEA-2034 Standard Method of Measurement for In-Home Loudspeakers
Summary: WG1 is working on ANSI/CEA-2034, which will describe how to test several common loudspeaker characteristics, and how to report the test results. The standard will apply to all separate home loudspeakers, including those for home theater systems or music systems, and including those intended for floor, shelf, on-wall or in-wall placement.

R4 Video Systems

Digital STB Background Power Consumption
Summary: WG13 is considering withdrawal of ANSI/CEA‐2013‐A, Digital STB Background Power Consumption. This standard defines maximum background (sleep) mode energy consumption for basic digital set-top boxes whose primary function is video reception and delivery. It is anticipated that ANSI/CEA-2043, Set-top Box (STB) Power Measurement, will replace this standard once ANSI/CEA-2043 is complete.

Digital STB Active Power Consumption Measurement
Summary:
WG13 is considering withdrawal of ANSI/CEA‐2022, Digital STB Active Power Consumption Measurement. This standard defines a method for measuring power consumption of a digital set top box (STB) whose primary function is video reception and delivery when operating in an active (on) state. It is anticipated that ANSI/CEA-2043, Set-top Box (STB) Power Measurement, will replace this standard once ANSI/CEA-2043 is complete.

Set-top Box (STB) Power Measurement
Summary: WG13 is working on ANSI/CEA-2043, which will define a method for measuring set-top box power consumption using the measurement parameters defined in International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC 62087: Methods of Measurement for the Power Consumption of Audio, Video and Related Equipment. ANSI/CEA-2043 will clarify test procedures, definitions and terms that are appropriate for North American markets. It is anticipated that this standard will replace ANSI/CEA‐2013‐A, Digital STB Background Power Consumption, and ANSI/CEA‐2022, Digital STB Active Power Consumption Measurement.

This standard is not intended to preclude channel mapping in cable systems.

Mobile/Handheld DTV Implementation Guidelines
Summary: WG18 is working on a revision to CEA-CEB26, Mobile/Handheld DTV Implementation Guidelines. This bulletin provides explanations of provisions in Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard A/153, ATSC Mobile/Handheld Digital Television Standard. It also provides recommendations for best practices to assure interoperability across different devices, geographies, service providers, application providers, operators, and networks.

WG1 CEA-708.2 ATSC 2.0 Services in the DTV Caption Stream
Summary: WG1 is working on CEA-708.2, an extension to CEA‐708 that will describe methods for signaling and transport of the following types of data: (1) URIs of specific types, corresponding to specific applications (types to be identified within the data structure); (2) the TSID of the channel carrying the DTV caption stream; and (3) the major and minor channel number of the channel carrying the DTV caption stream.

WG8 ANSI/CEA-2020 R-20XX Other VBI Waveforms
Summary: WG8 is considering reaffirmation of ANSI/CEA-2020, Other VBI Waveforms. This standard describes the electical properties of four vertical blanking interval (VBI) waveforms in commercial use. It does not describe the payload data. The waveforms apply to 525-line, interlaced (i.e., 480i) analog television signals. The waveforms may be present on analog inputs and analog outputs, but no conformance requirements about the actual presence of the waveforms are defined in ANSI/CEA-2020.

WG13 ANSI-J-STD-042-B Emergency Alert Messaging for Cable
Summary: CEA and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) are revising ANSI-J-STD-042-A, which was developed jointly by CEA and SCTE. This standard defines an Emergency Alert signaling method for use by cable TV systems to signal emergencies to digital receiving devices that are offered for retail sale. Such devices include digital set-top boxes that are sold to consumers at retail, digital TV receivers, and digital video recorders. This standard is also known as CEA-814-B.

R4.8 DTV Interface

CEA's DTV Interface Subcommittee produces standards for RF, analog and digital interfaces that enable connectivity between TV receivers and other consumer devices. All are encouraged to join the DTV Interface Subcommittee and get involved in its activities.

 
WG5 CEA-770.3-E High Definition TV Analog Component Video Interface
Summary: WG5 is working on a revision to CEA-770.3-D. This standard defines two raster-scanning systems for the representation of stationary or moving two-dimensional images sampled temporally at a constant frame rate. The first image format specified is 1280 x 720 samples (pixels) inside a total raster of 750 lines, as given in Table 1. The second image format specified is 1920 x 1080 samples (pixels) inside a total raster of 1125 lines, as given in Table 1. Both image formats shall have an aspect ratio of 16:9. This standard specifies an analog interface having Y', P'B, P'R color encoding.

Summary: WG7 is working on a revision to CEA-861-E. This standard defines protocols and requirements for uncompressed digital interfaces that connect consumer electronics devices, such as digital televisions, digital set-top boxes, and similar devices. This standard is applicable to a variety of DTV-related high-speed digital physical interfaces such as the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) 1.0, the Open LVDS Display Interface (LDI), and the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI).

Summary: WG12 is considering reaffirmation of ANSI/CEA-775.2-A, Service Selection Information for Digital Storage Media Interoperability. This standard supports the use of digital storage devices that record or time-shift digital television signals by defining Service Selection Information (SSI), methods for managing discontinuities that occur during recording and playback, and rules for management of partial Transport Streams. It is part of the ANSI/CEA-775-C group of standards, which standardize the IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus interface for DTV receivers.

Summary: R6 is considering reaffirmation of ANSI/CEA-2017.1. This standard describes a serial communication protocol that enables command and control communication between portable electronic devices and accessories attached to those devices. This protocol builds upon functions provided by the MOST® network developed by the MOST Cooperation (www.mostcooperation.com). MOST® is a registered trademark of SMSC (www.smsc.com).

Summary: WG3 is developing ANSI/CEA-2042.3. This standard will establish a common method for determining power transfer efficiency and standby power for consumer electronics devices that incorporate wireless power transfer functionality.

Summary: WG5 is developing ANSI/CEA-2042.5. This standard will define system requirements for a tightly coupled wireless power system. A tightly coupled wireless power system is an inductive wireless power transfer system with a strong magnetic linkage between the primary and secondary coil.

R7 CEA-2027-B A User Interface for Home Networks Using Web-based Protocols
Summary: R7 is considering withdrawal of CEA-2027-B. This standard addresses user control of remote audio/video devices on home networks. It describes how audio/video devices may present status and control user interfaces on remote devices attached to a network, and describes how this user interface data can be encapsulated using web and internet protocols. User control is through a browser and graphical user interface, the design of which is determined by the implementers of this standard.

WG13 ANSI/CEA-709.3 R-20XX Free-Topology Twisted-Pair Channel Specification
Summary: WG13 is considering reaffirmation of ANSI/CEA-709.3 R-2004. This document specifies the EIA-709.3 free-topology twisted-pair channel and covers the complete physical layer (OSI Layer 1), including the interface to the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the interface to the medium. The EIA-709.3 free-topology twisted-pair channel supports communication at 78.125 kbps between multiple nodes, each of which consists of a transceiver, a protocol processor, an application processor, a power supply, and application electronics. Parameters that are controlled by other layers but control the operation of the physical layer are also specified.

WG1 ANSI/CEA-2045 Amendment 1 Modular Communications Interface
Summary: WG1 is working on an amendment to ANSI/CEA-2045, Modular Communications Interface for Energy Management. This amendment will fix an error in Figure 16-11, which shows the most significant bit (MS bit) being transmitted first in the AC form factor serial protocol. Section 4.1.4 correctly indicates that the AC form factor is supposed to be least significant bit (LS bit) first. The amendment may also include additional changes that might be recommended based on experiences from implementing the standard.

WG2 ANSI/CEA-2047 CE Energy Usage Information (CE-EUI)
Summary: WG2 is working on ANSI/CEA-2047. This standard will enable consumer electronics (CE) devices to communicate their energy usage information within the home, enabling homeowners to understand and monitor the energy being used by their products. The standard will also allow CE devices to optionally respond to basic commands from electric utilities. It will enable mapping to and from the North American Energy Standards Board Priority Action Plan 10 (NAESB/PAP10) Energy Usage Information (EUI) model, and utilize ANSI/CEA-2045, Modular Communications Interface for Energy Management, messaging where possible.

The joint CEA/CEDIA Residential Systems Committee produces standards for the design and installation of residential systems. All are encouraged to join the Residential Systems Committee and get involved in its activities.

 
WG3 CEA/CEDIA-CEB28 A/V Distribution Over Existing Cables
Summary: WG3 is working on CEA/CEDIA-CEB28. This bulletin will provide recommendations for electronic system designers and installers on how to use existing wiring in residential environments, including coaxial and CAT 5/6 cables, to distribute digital audio and video while maintaining both the integrity of the content and the functionality of content protection.

It will define a standardized set of blueprint icons that represent all facets of pre-wire and installation of electronic systems, products and devices in residential environments. This standard will not cover anything beyond architectural blueprints.
